In many schools, workshop maintenance happens informally: a machine gets checked once a problem is already obvious, or once a member of staff raises a concern. Good practice instead recommends a planned schedule of regular inspection, catching issues such as worn belts, loose guards, damaged tooling or ineffective extraction before they affect teaching or safety.
Alongside visits, I can work directly with your technicians to build their confidence and routines for keeping the workshop maintained day to day, not just during scheduled check-ins.

What a maintenance visit actually covers
Workshop maintenance rarely means major mechanical repair. Instead, it focuses on making sure machines stay safe, correctly set up and suitable for pupils to use.
BS4163 highlights the importance of keeping workshop machinery in safe working order, and schools must be able to demonstrate that equipment used by pupils is safe and suitable. Regular maintenance supports that expectation, and it supports staff confidence when supervising practical work.
When maintenance should happen
The most effective time is usually during school holidays, when machines can be inspected and adjusted without disrupting teaching, and any issues addressed before the new term starts. As part of the D&T Safety Partnership, maintenance can be scheduled alongside annual safety audits and staff training, so equipment issues and safe working practice are addressed together.
